While the usual multiplayer games can be extremely fun to grind through, sometimes, we just want to sit back, relax, and play through something new with our friends. With a new multiplayer game seemingly released every day, it can be hard to find something truly unique.

I played through some multiplayer games on Steam in order to find some underappreciated gems and I have mentioned them in this article. A lot of these games in the list are cooperative multiplayer, making them great to play with a small group of friends.

For multiplayer gaming, I recommend having a fast and stable internet connection, because nobody wants to watch their friend stutter and teleport their way through a game.

Most of my friend group uses Cox Internet without any complaints. A Latino friend of mine swears by their service, mainly since they offer Cox servicio al cliente en español, where Spanish-speakers can directly talk to a native representative. Their high-tier internet plans offer speeds of up to 2000 Mbps, which are more than enough for multiplayer gaming on several devices at once.

Now that you have your internet all se tup, let’s dive into six of the most underrated multiplayer games you need to play right now.

Splitgate

Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes

It Takes Two

Overcooked 2

DYO

Deep Rock Galactic

  1. Splitgate
6 Most Underrated Multiplayer Games You Need to Play

Splitgate is a multiplayer game that offers a combination of a lot of unique mechanics in games.

It’s a first-person shooter similar to games like Halo, Doom, and Quake, with elements from competitive games like Call of Duty and Counter-Strike. It captures the essence of old-school FPS games while adding a lot of modern elements.

But that’s not all. Splitgate adds a unique twist by allowing players to create their own portals. This adds another dimension to the typical FPS gameplay, where players can create their own path.

Splitgate 2 was recently announced and is slated for release some time in 2025. The original game is still available to download and play on Steam, and the new game is going to expand upon the concept.

  1. Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes
6 Most Underrated Multiplayer Games You Need to Play

While multiplayer games are a dime a dozen these days, there are only a few truly co-op games you can find. Among those is this little indie gem. In this game, one player is stuck in a room with a bomb, with no idea how to diffuse it.

The other player (or players) are “Experts” who don’t know anything about the bomb, but have the instructions to defuse it. This leads to frantic rounds, with everyone screaming out instructions, trying to help the player defuse the bomb.

The game can be played with two or more players and the bomb is randomly generated each round, keeping the gameplay fresh every time you play.

  1. It Takes Two

As brilliant as the studio’s first game, A Way Out, It Takes Two is the perfect game to play with your partner. It’s a co-op platformer that seems to feature a unique gameplay element at every turn.

The game can be played online or split screen. I recommend playing this game locally with your partner on a TV screen since online play can cause a lot of lag which can make the puzzles more challenging. The story also gets deep and is surprisingly very touching.

The graphics in this game are insanely good and the entire game is super polished and consistent throughout. This game is more of a love letter to co-op gaming and is a perfect experience to share with someone special in your life.

  1. Overcooked 2

Overcooked is one of the most chaotic co-op games you’ll ever play. You work as a chef in a kitchen, and your job is to cook a variety of dishes before the time runs out.

While you can play the game solo, the real fun lies in the 4-player cooperative modes. The controls are simple to learn, meaning that anyone can hop in. However, finding a team that coordinates is going to be a challenge since things can get hectic.

The levels are extremely creative and a lot of levels introduce additional challenges like moving platforms and portals.

  1. DYO

This is a game that’s hard to explain in words. It’s a local cooperative puzzle platformer where two players have to navigate a maze and solve some mind-bending puzzles.

The unique twist comes as each of the player characters is trapped in one half of the screen. You have the ability to merge both halves into one which can open new ways for you to traverse the levels. The game has 30 unique levels and each has multiple solutions.

The game’s design allows two players to use the same controller, making it a great game to play with that one co-op duo.

  1. Deep Rock Galactic
6 Most Underrated Multiplayer Games You Need to Play

If you’re a fan of exploration, spelunking, scavenging, and fighting hordes of aliens, Deep Rock Galactic is just the game for you.

You have the option to play with up to three more players, and each player can choose one of four unique classes. The Gunner can take down enemies, the Scout can explore and light up paths, the Driller can dig through the rocks and the Engineer can set up turrets.

The caves are procedurally generated and are fully destructible, meaning that you’ll have a unique experience every time you play.

I hope these games are enough to satiate your hunger for co-op multiplayer games to play with your friends or that special someone. Do you have more game suggestions? Feel free to leave them in the comments below.
